Know that whatever spoils you obtain, one-fifth belongs to Allah[1] and the Messenger, to his close relatives[2], the orphans, the needy and the [stranded] travelers – if you truly believe in Allah and in what We sent down to Our slave[3] on the day of Criterion[4] – the day when the two armies met [at Badr]. And Allah is Most Capable of all things.

Notes

[1] To be spent in the cause of Allah. [2] The Messenger’s share was his during his lifetime and, according to most scholars, is spent after his death on the general interests of the Muslims. His close relatives are the clans of Banu Hāshim and Banu al-Muṭṭalib, who are not eligible for zakah. [3] Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). [4] The Battle of Badr.
