You [O Prophet] may postpone [the turn of] whoever you wish [of your wives], and you may share your time with whoever of them you wish[1], and there is no blame on you if you call back any of those whose turn you have set aside. That is more likely that they will be content and not distressed, and that they will be satisfied with what you give them all. Allah knows what is in your hearts, and Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

Notes

[1] i.e., Allah relieved the Prophet (ﷺ) of the obligation to divide his time equally among his wives, yet he continued to do so. The Prophet’s marital life is classified into four stages: He was single until the age of 25. He was married only to Khadijah from the age of 25 to 50. Shortly after Khadījah’s death, at about the age of 50, he married Sawdah and was contracted to ‘Ā’ishah; he married the rest of his wives in Madinah, ten wives in all after Khadījah, never more than nine at one time, until his death at the age of 63.
